Image by Jerry Ferguson I had recently been lucky enough to return to Phoenix, my hometown, for a brief stint. After covering all the basics of the holiday season, and just before I set off on my current travels, my best friend insisted we have a leave-it-all-on-the-field kind of weekend while he showed me all the best spots for geeks like us.
It was a beautiful fusion of games, alcohol, food, alcohol, and more games with some alcohol. Despite what it may sound like, I was able to document the night, and would like to present some of the top geeky things to do in Phoenix. Funkatronic Rex This place is a refuge for anyone who still likes realia when they geek out— they rock everything from puzzles all the way up to Warhammer 40K tables, with room for everything in between. You are going to need some money for the cabinets, but this is the place to go for those single geeks among us.
So, a quick shout out to those who still like sitting on the same couch while gaming. Threw us back to sleepovers in middle school playing most of the night. Also, as a word of warning: This event, while admittedly not on every weekend, is more a demonstration just how invested Phoenix has become in damn good food.
The scene here has grown fast, and no specific type of cuisine faster than Mexican. Over 20 different restaurants showed up to compete to have the best taco and us voters reaped the benefits— we sampled as many as our stomachs allowed while we considered our vote.
They have, hands down, the best breakfast plates I have ever had the pleasure of wolfing down— knocked my hangover right out, but made squeezing tacos into my gut afterward a bit more difficult.
