Prince William's favourite singer Ellie Goulding shows off her 'vajazzle' 24 Jun She will then embark on a countrywide tour, taking in the legendary West Coast music festival Coachella: Soon after everything took off in late she began to feel frighteningly ill.
I suppose it all got too much for my body. Her thoughts became increasingly morbid. And, actually, she tells me, vague and new age-y as that sounds, it worked. So, looking back, does she think that all the hype was a poisoned chalice? It kind of kills me to live here, a little bit. I think hype is a good thing. She has a small frame, but with the taut intensity of a long-distance runner. When she tucks her blonde back-combed hair behind her ear, the shaven left side of her head is revealed.
She radiates an air of determined self-sufficiency. At this point I should mention that Goulding is in training, and has been for the past six years.
She woke one morning, when she was 18, with a thought buzzing in her brain: Of her time at university she says, 'It kind of took over my degree.
I ran and ran and exercised. As I try to hide my bewilderment with a solemn look and knotted brow, Goulding laughs. Her voice is the real star. It all seems a long way from the council house in Herefordshire where she grew up with her mother and three siblings — two sisters and a brother.
But her childhood was unsettled by complicated relationships with men. First, there was her father, who left her mother when Goulding was five. He came from a family of undertakers and had a suitably gruesome cast of mind.
And he had books on the Krays and the Moors murderers, so I learnt about pretty much every high-profile murderer in this file. Anyway, I brought it home once and my mum was so freaked out she burnt it. I could imagine him opening it up, in the cab of his lorry… but I quite like that idea, really, because he got his comeuppance, finally.
There was a lot of heartache, unrequited or impossible love, boys who already had girlfriends, that sort of thing. She wrote things down often, and occasionally wrote in a diary. In fact, beside her bed she keeps a diary she wrote when she was eight. What would someone who read it make of her? It would cause a lot of trouble. Like, who am I trying to impress? Am I going to get respect, critical acclaim? Or am I going to sell lots of records? I just want to do it without thinking.
I trusted my instincts on the first album and just went with the ideas that came out. Ellie Goulding is, in many ways, alarmingly self-possessed — her response to one journalist who criticised her was to invite him to one of her shows 'He said that although he hated to admit it, he enjoyed it.
